This illustrated magazine's cover, featuring a roaring, lion-emblazoned goliath with a championship title belt strapped to his waist may earmark it for fans of professional wrestling, but it’s solid entertainment for anyone who loves hand-drawn comic book art and elaborate science fiction sagas.
When airborne pods kidnap people around the world to repopulate an alien world, those left behind become mutated super-beings. Some become de facto advocates for the mysterious aliens, promoting cross-species understanding. Others use their newfound abilities--the most powerful somehow being mystical in nature--to wrest control of their respective environments and rule with an iron hand.
With super-powered dictators a constant threat, the remaining humans and non-aggressive mutates band together in hidden rural enclaves, alien-influenced religious cults, or the colder comfort of street gang affiliation--if they aren’t already distracted by the spectacle provided by the champions of the squared circle. What the extraterrestrial geneticists could not have known was that the world they upturned to find reproductive fodder was one where lucha libre and its offshoots have enthralled the populace to the point where no other sports have sustained their followings. Sports entertainment, as a profession, has become a Mecca for both the powerful and the obscenely ambitious. Will it also prove to be the ultimate testing ground for freedom fighters in this strange, newly oppressive world? Will the most fearsome of these grapplers, the undeniable “Conquering Lion” Menelik, become something more to the people than just another egotistical entertainer?
Joseph R. Wheeler’s detailed illustrations show the marked influence of his training as a traditional painter. There is a painter’s sensuality in the line work--his freehand style is a rare quality among today’s grassroots comic book artists who rely too much on digital media. His elaborate character designs draw the reader into this world of clashing archetypes, while his enthusiasm for his chosen themes is clear and offered unapologetically--a creative aspect sorely needed in this era of rampant imitation and corporate-owned comics-by-committee. While the comic book art-lover in me hopes for even more sequential art in future work, the back-story that this first issue provides is a great introduction to a new, well-structured science fiction universe.
